Conveyor Belt Material and Type

The application of the conveyor belt is different, and the material used is also different. Most conveyor belts used today are 4 types of materials: plastic material, metal material, rubber material and leather material.

Plastic material

Plastic material conveyor belts are made of thermoplastic polymers. Because plastic conveyor belts are relatively soft, they are very suitable for many industries, including food processing, textile production and other applications.

The two most common types of plastic material conveyor belts are polyurethane (PU) belts and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts.

PU conveyor belt: PU conveyor belt is very suitable for food production. They can withstand extremely low and extremely high temperatures without melting or warping, and they are easy to clean.

PVC conveyor belt: PVC conveyor belt is usually flame-retardant, it can withstand temperature similar to PU conveyor belt, and it is durable. PVC’s belts are usually corrugated to achieve maximum grip.

Metal material

Metal material conveyor belts are strong and durable. It is suitable for almost all industries, especially those that deal with original products such as food service or unpackaged products. In addition to durability, these belts are flat and easy to use. Since it is not easy to deform and bend, the conveying path may be restricted.

Metal material conveyor belts are usually made of aluminum or special-shaped stainless steel or carbon steel.

Rubber material

Rubber material conveyor belt is the most popular conveyor belt in industrial applications. It is suitable for mines, quarries, cement plants, power stations, steel plants and other applications, used to transport minerals, gravel, sand, cement clinker, coal and other bulk materials.

Rubber conveyor belts usually consist of a carcass and a cover ply. The carcass is mainly made of fabric and steel cords, and the covering layer is a rubber composite. It can make the rubber conveyor belt have the characteristics of wear resistance, impact resistance, heat resistance and oil resistance.

Common fabric materials are nylon, polyester, etc.

Nylon: Nylon has high durability, heat resistance, and can withstand severe shocks. In the case of a hybrid conveyor belt, it also adheres well to the rubber. It is also less prone to mold than other fabrics.

Polyester: Polyester is another synthetic material used for conveyor belts. It has many of the same advantages as nylon, but is generally cheaper and quieter in operation.

The steel cord conveyor belt is made of galvanized steel wire.

Leather material

Many early models of belts were made of leather. The leather is also impact resistant and has good grip. Nowadays leather is commonly used as part of hybrid or customized conveyor belts.

The conveyor belts of these materials can generally be divided into two categories: lightweight Conveyor Belting and heavy rubber conveyor belting.

Lightweight Conveyor Belting

Lightweight belts are designed to meet various material handling requirements in different industries. The four main types of lightweight conveyor belts are: solid plastic, non-woven fabric, thermoplastic cover and lightweight rubber.

They are widely used in food processing, packaging, pharmaceuticals, paper products and other industries.

Heavy rubber conveyor belting

For the most difficult applications, please use heavy-duty conveyor belting. Heavy-duty belt systems are used in applications that require continuous movement of bulky materials. It is suitable for heavy industries such as mining, manufacturing, waste/recycling, cement plants and power plants. It is used to transport minerals, crushed stone, sand, cement clinker and other materials.
